Job Description

Salary: £70,000 - 70,000 per year

Requirements

  • MSc in computer science, IT or a related field, or in bioinformatics with demonstrated IT expertise
  • Expert in Data Modelling and Advanced SQL
  • Proficiency in Python programming
  • Proficiency in ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools for large-scale data processing
  • Strong understanding of relational databases
  • Extensive hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including performance tuning, partitioning strategies, indexing techniques, and query optimisation
  • Extensive experience with Oracle databases, including PL/SQL, and performance optimisation
  • Familiarity with MySQL/MariaDB
  • Proven experience in migrating databases across different RDBMS platforms
  • Experience with migration tools such as Oracle Data Pump, GoldenGate, and custom ETL scripts
  • Knowledge of data warehousing technologies (e.g., Redshift, BigQuery)
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Proficiency in oral and written English
  • Potential additional qualifications include:
  • - PhD in relevant fields
  • - Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop)
  • - Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
  • - Familiarity with Java, Google Cloud Platform, AWS
  • - Knowledge of data modelling for AI and ML applications
  • - Familiarity with Neo4J or similar graph databases
  • - Familiarity with data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI)
  • - Knowledge or affinity with structural biology and bioinformatics

Responsibilities

  • Analyse existing data pipelines and identify areas for improvement, optimisation, and scalability
  • Work closely with Bioinformaticians and annotators to integrate data pipelines with existing systems and applications
  • Monitor data pipeline performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to ensure reliability and efficiency
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data engineering
  • Recommend new technologies or tools to enhance data infrastructure
  • Document data pipelines, processes, and workflows for internal reference and knowledge sharing
