Senior Backend Engineer

Salary: £43,000 - 70,000 per year

Requirements

• We are looking for strong collaboration and communication skills in a fully remote squad environment.
• We need solid experience with at least one programming language; Go is preferred, though experience with Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar is transferable.
• We value experience delivering projects end to end, from gathering requirements and brainstorming through to shipping the product.
• We expect some experience developing software that runs in the cloud or working in systems engineering.
• We look for some experience with on-call work and the DevOps model.
• We want experience writing clean, robust, performant software that is maintainable by others.
• We value familiarity with observability systems and knowing when to use metrics, logs, and traces to debug problems.
• Bonus: experience with Kubernetes.
• Bonus: experience with queue systems, such as Kafka.
• Bonus: experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles.
• Bonus: exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn.
• Bonus: familiarity with infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

• Influence our roadmap and your own career objectives.
• Work with your team to deliver new features and iterate based on results.
• Drive projects from initial idea through to operations once they are in customers hands.
• Contribute to our open-source culture and help with projects beyond your immediate team scope.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability.
• Participate in your teams follow-the-sun on-call rotations and own the services you run.
• Support teammates, take part in design discussions, and collaborate closely with the team.
• Learn new skills by deepening your understanding of our cloud product, customers, and large distributed codebase.
• Write and review pull requests and design documents.
• Help guide automated release rollouts.
• Maintain and improve the open source Grafana Mimir OSS project and Grafana Cloud Metrics across major cloud providers.
