Principal Java Software Engineer

Salary: £90,000 - 90,000 per year

Requirements

• We require at least 10 years of experience, at principal or staff grade equivalent.
• We require expert-level Java experience, ideally with Java 17 or 21 and modern language features.
• We require deep Spring Boot experience, including security, transaction management, and async/reactive patterns.
• We require experience designing microservices architecture from scratch.
• We require production experience with Kubernetes and Docker.
• We require hands-on AWS experience, including EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS, and EventBridge.
• We require ownership of CI/CD pipelines.
• We require a strong automated testing discipline, including JUnit, Mockito, integration testing, and TDD or BDD.
• We require frontend leadership experience in React, with leadership specifically over React work.
• We require experience implementing FFE/BFE separation.
• We require architecture ownership across multiple systems.
• We require cross-team technical leadership and experience influencing engineering standards, technology choices, or hiring.
• We require evidence of growing other engineers.
• We require UK SC Security Clearance eligibility.
• We require candidates to be UK nationals with 5 years of continuous UK residency.
• We cannot consider candidates who require sponsorship now or in the future for UK permanent employment status.

Responsibilities

• We will expect you to write code as well as set technical direction.
• We will expect you to work on our Java/Spring Boot microservices platform on AWS EKS.
• We will expect you to contribute to our Next.js frontend and Camunda-based process orchestration.
• We will expect you to travel occasionally to London for client work, approximately once a month, with travel expenses paid.

We are a growing technology consultancy offering a principal software engineering role that can be based remotely, with occasional paid travel to London for client work. This is a hands-on principal engineering position where you will combine technical leadership, architecture ownership, and hands-on development. Our current delivery includes a Java/Spring Boot microservices platform on AWS EKS, a Next.js frontend, and Camunda-based process orchestration. We also value consultancy and client-facing delivery experience, and we are looking for someone who can help shape our engineering direction while contributing directly to delivery.
