Backend Software Engineer

Salary: £100,000 - 110,000 per year

Requirements

• Proven experience working as a Java Software Engineer on large microservice architectures
• Active Security Clearance (SC)
• Strong capability building scalable RESTful APIs and backend services in Java (Spring Boot)
• Proficiency with Postgres (or other relational SQL databases) and solid understanding of schema design and SQL
• Experience with Docker, confident in containerising and deploying applications
• Familiarity with Test-Driven Development (JUnit & Mockito or similar testing frameworks)
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD using Jenkins or similar automated pipeline tooling
• Flexibility working in agile teams and collaborating closely with engineers, product, and design colleagues
• Nice to have: API Specification using Swagger/OpenAPI
• Nice to have: Experience with Gradle build systems
• Nice to have: Familiarity with Liquibase (or similar) for database versioning/migrations
• Nice to have: Experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms
• Nice to have: Knowledge of React and Typescript

Responsibilities

• Participate in the design and implementation of large-scale microservices architecture
• Develop and maintain robust RESTful APIs and backend services using Java (Spring Boot)
• Collaborate with the team to containerise and deploy applications using Docker
• Write and maintain unit tests to ensure code quality through Test-Driven Development
• Work with the CI/CD pipeline for seamless integration and delivery
• Engage actively in agile ceremonies and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
• Continuously improve system performance and reliability through best practices
• Contribute to documentation and specification of APIs
