Senior Technical Lead

Salary: £8,400 - 36,000 per year

Requirements

• We need a senior-level engineering background spanning cloud infrastructure (AWS) and SIP/telephony architectures.
• We need experience leading or coordinating delivery across a small technical team, including Jira-based backlog management.
• We need the ability to review and constructively challenge the output of both an AI/ML engineer and a cloud infrastructure engineer.
• We need comfort acting as the primary technical point of contact for a client.
• We need an understanding of NHS data handling requirements and regulated environment standards.
• We need availability for daily 12:00 GMT standups, weekly worksheet submissions, and responsiveness within 4 hours on working days.

Responsibilities

• We own the architecture for the POC and are accountable for its successful delivery.
• We manage the Jira backlog across two specialist contractors.
• We review monthly output against agreed acceptance criteria.
• We resolve cross-workstream blockers between the AI and Cloud Engineering workstreams.
• We act as the primary technical escalation point for Ladybird throughout the engagement.
• In month 1, we establish and document the overall POC architecture, set up and prioritise the Jira backlog, agree deliverables and acceptance criteria, and document architecture decisions in Confluence.
• In month 2, we oversee the build-out of the 3CX IVR, NHS PDS FHIR error handling, OpenAI GPT integration, and AWS Transcribe connection; we review and sign off audit logging for NHS compliance; and we issue written approval or raise concerns on deliverables.
• In month 3, we lead the end-to-end POC demonstration, review and sign off the CTI event layer and mock EMIS integration, own the POC-to-production migration plan, and sign off final technical documentation.
• We provide oversight and delivery management rather than hands-on build work.

We are delivering inCall, an AI-powered receptionist for NHS GP practices. Patients call in, the AI verifies identity against NHS records, understands the reason for calling, and handles the conversation. We are running a three-month cloud-based proof of concept to validate the full architecture before committing to permanent infrastructure. This is a remote, self-employed contract with IR35 to be assessed, and the work is structured around daily standups, weekly worksheet reviews, and monthly acceptance sign-off. The role sits within a broader four-stage product roadmap, and a Senior Engineer who delivers a clean, well-documented POC will be well placed for future technical leadership opportunities.
