Requirements

• We require a minimum of 5 years experience in a data centre operations role, with hands-on experience in equipment decommissioning, space optimisation, and infrastructure documentation.
• We require strong hands-on infrastructure engineering experience across VMware, storage, server, networking, and security technologies.
• We require experience testing and validating systems independently in a controlled lab environment and troubleshooting issues when things do not go to plan.
• We require experience with physical network and server hardware, including installation, cabling, and troubleshooting.
• We require good knowledge of on-prem IT infrastructure, including x86 hardware, Windows, Linux, virtualisation platforms, networking, security, and storage technologies.
• We require familiarity with data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) tools and asset management software.
• We require familiarity with out-of-band management platforms such as iLO, iDRAC, XCC, and Redfish.
• We require understanding of firmware lifecycle management and best practices for lab testing.
• We require experience creating run book documentation and maintaining technical documentation, including floor plans and network diagrams.
• We require strong organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks independently.
• We require strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• We require the ability to work in a physical data centre/lab environment, including walking, standing, and lifting equipment up to 50 lbs.
• We consider relevant certifications such as CompTIA Data or Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP) a plus.

Responsibilities

• We support on-premises test labs, including pre-production build and test activities.
• We manage IP addresses, networks, SANs, cabling, power, and equipment placement within the lab.
• We perform cable tracing, auditing, installation, and demises of equipment and kit.
• We independently test, validate, and troubleshoot systems in a controlled lab environment.
• We work with VMware and enterprise virtualisation environments to support compute virtualisation.
• We support firewall technologies, Juniper networking, enterprise switches, block storage, and enterprise storage platforms.
• We maintain documentation and inventory records using tools such as Jira and other documentation systems.
• We assist with capacity planning and monitoring of power, cooling, and space utilisation.
• We collaborate with the IT Infrastructure team to plan for future capacity requirements, new deployments, and upgrades.
• We ensure all work follows company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
• We apply best practices for cable management, equipment labelling, and environmental monitoring.
• We work closely with network, server, and storage teams to provide space, power, and hands-on support for installations, moves, demises, and troubleshooting.
• We assist with audits and inspections to help keep the lab compliant with relevant standards and regulations.

We are a global technology company seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Data Centre IT Lab Engineer to join our IT Infrastructure team on a 6-month contract with the potential to extend. This is an onsite role in South Yorkshire, with a working pattern of 3 to 4 days per week in the office/data centre environment, and an inside IR35 day rate of £350 to £380. The role offers the opportunity to work across remote, office, and data centre/lab environments, supporting critical infrastructure engineering, lab validation, and operational excellence within a collaborative team.
