Remote Director of Software Engineering

Salary: £63,000 - 103,000 per year

Requirements

• 10+ years in software engineering with 5+ years leading development teams of 8–20 engineers.
• Deep, current hands-on experience with Node.js, including Express or Nest, async patterns, performance tuning, and microservices.
• Working knowledge of the Salesforce platform, including Apex, Lightning Web Components, Flows, REST/Platform Events, and Node.js to Salesforce integration patterns.
• Proven technical architect background with experience designing distributed systems, API contracts, data models, and performance-critical production solutions.
• Track record of schedule compression with measurable reductions in cycle time or release dates without sacrificing quality.
• Strong estimation and planning discipline in Agile/Scrum or Kanban environments.
• Experience driving solution performance, including profiling, caching, query optimization, horizontal scaling, and observability tools such as APM, logs, and traces.
• Cloud-native delivery experience, preferably with AWS, CI/CD, IaC, and modern DevOps practices.
• Excellent stakeholder communication skills with the ability to negotiate scope, time, and quality trade-offs with executives.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of 10 full-stack developers across Node.js services and Salesforce customizations.
• Drive measurable improvements in developer velocity using DORA metrics such as lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and MTTR.
• Compress delivery schedules by breaking epics into small, independently shippable slices and challenging inflated estimates with data.
• Architect end-to-end solutions spanning Node.js microservices, APIs, event-driven patterns, and Salesforce technologies.
• Own solution performance across latency, throughput, scalability, and cost, and set SLOs for the team.
• Establish estimation, sprint, and release discipline; remove blockers; and enforce accountability without burning the team out.
• Partner with Product, QA, and Infrastructure to align roadmap, capacity, and dependencies.
• Recruit, onboard, and performance-manage engineers while building a culture of ownership and speed.
• Reduce average lead time for changes and increase deployment frequency to meet high or elite DORA benchmarks.
• Ship the current roadmap on a compressed timeline agreed with leadership.
• Improve estimate accuracy to within an agreed tolerance.
• Meet or exceed performance SLOs for the Node.js and Salesforce solution stack.
• Retain and level up the existing team while filling any skill gaps.
