Director of Software Engineering

Salary: £120,000 - 150,000 per year

Requirements

• We are looking for someone already operating as a Director of Engineering, Senior Head of Engineering, or in a senior leadership capacity within a modern, product-led software business.
• We need experience leading multiple engineering teams through Engineering Managers in a manager-of-managers structure, with responsibility for at least 35 people.
• We want a track record of operating as a Director or Senior Engineering Lead across 2 or more roles, developing Engineering Managers and building leadership capability.
• We require experience within high-growth, product-led SaaS environments.
• We need exceptional people leadership and coaching skills.
• We want strong partnership experience with Product leadership.
• We need experience improving engineering performance using frameworks such as DORA, SPACE, or similar.
• We want a proven track record of scaling engineering organisations and leading organisational change.
• We need strong commercial awareness and the ability to balance engineering excellence with business outcomes.
• Desirable experience includes private equity-backed or scale-up businesses, AI adoption or engineering transformation programmes, M&A integration, modern cloud-native environments including PHP, React, AWS and PostgreSQL, and quality engineering transformation and shift-left testing practices.

Responsibilities

• We will need you to lead, coach, and develop Engineering Managers and Senior Engineering Managers.
• We will rely on you to strengthen leadership capability, accountability, and performance across Engineering.
• We want you to partner with Product leadership to align engineering delivery with commercial priorities.
• We will expect you to improve engineering effectiveness through metrics and continuous improvement initiatives.
• We want you to champion AI adoption across engineering teams and software delivery practices.
• You will support organisational planning, succession planning, and career development.
• You will collaborate with senior technical leaders to ensure technology strategy aligns with business goals.
• You will help shape organisational design as the engineering function continues to grow.
• You will support ongoing engineering transformation, architectural evolution, and future organisational scaling initiatives.

We are a high-growth, product-led SaaS organisation investing heavily in engineering, AI, and product innovation during an exciting stage of our journey. This is a newly created leadership role reporting to our VP of Engineering, supporting an engineering organisation of around 45 people across 7-9 teams. We offer a £120,000 - £150,000 base salary, equity, excellent benefits, and a remote working setup with travel to London once a month, giving you significant influence across Engineering and Product as we build an AI-first engineering organisation and continue to scale.
