What is a ghost job?

Ghost jobs are not always scams: some employers repost the same role for months, leave listings up after a hire, or recycle descriptions without an active recruiter behind them.

The distinction matters because the defence differs. A scam wants something from you now, so it shows up in the apply path and in early requests for money or documents. A ghost job wants nothing from you at all, which is exactly what makes it hard to detect: the company is real, the listing is well written, and the role may genuinely have existed at some point.

Several ordinary business situations produce them. A role is frozen mid-process but nobody takes the posting down. A company keeps an evergreen listing for a position it hires continuously, so the same advert runs all year. A team builds a bench for a role it expects to open next quarter. None of this is malicious, and all of it costs you the same afternoon.

The signal that travels best is time. A listing continuously open far longer than comparable roles at comparable companies, without being touched, is the cheapest thing you can check before investing effort. It is not proof. Senior and specialist roles legitimately stay open longer, and a long-running listing at a company that is visibly interviewing is a different thing from one that has sat untouched for a quarter.

Treat ghost signals as a priority ordering rather than a verdict. If a role fits you well, apply anyway, but spend your best cover letter on the fresh listing at the company that is visibly moving, and consider reaching someone on the team directly rather than relying on a form nobody may be monitoring.
