Sybase Engineer

Salary: £50,000 - 70,000 per year

Requirements

• We are seeking a Senior Sybase Engineer with significant experience as a database or platform engineer for Sybase ASE, not only as an operational DBA.
• We require deep working knowledge of Sybase ASE and Replication Server 16.0 (SP03 and SP04) on RHEL 7 and 8, including installation, configuration, upgrade and performance tuning from an engineering perspective.
• We require practical experience supporting the implementation of encryption at rest and in transit for an ASE 16.0 estate.
• We need at least 3 years of experience as a technical SME escalation point for a Sybase estate, including high-severity incidents and cross-stack root cause analysis.
• We require experience designing or evolving internal database platform offerings such as golden images, standard build pipelines and shared configuration modules.
• We require familiarity with Git-based workflows and code review for infrastructure automation and configuration, such as Bitbucket or similar.
• We need experience contributing to database governance, configuration standards, operational run books and internal audit or security reviews.
• We require a proven track record of owning platform-level change, including packaging and validating database and OS patches, managing change through controlled environments and documenting risks.
• We require practical understanding of Linux internals, storage, networking and hardware as they affect Sybase behaviour and performance.
• We expect the ability to read, debug and enhance existing Sybase automation and tooling written in Bash, ksh and Python.
• We require the ability to work effectively with UNIX, storage, network and virtualisation teams.
• This is a 6 month contract role based remotely.

Responsibilities

• We own the Sybase ASE and Replication Server platform used by our DBAs and application teams.
• We act as the technical escalation point for Sybase issues across the bank.
• We partner with infrastructure engineers and application teams to resolve complex platform and database issues.
• We support regulatory and audit obligations for the Sybase estate.
• We work on Agile project deliveries rather than a support rota.
• We install, configure, upgrade and tune Sybase ASE and Replication Server infrastructure on RHEL.
• We support the rollout of encryption at rest and in transit across the current Sybase ASE estate.
• We read, debug and enhance existing automation and tooling to improve reliability and maintainability.
• We design and evolve internal database platform offerings for other teams to consume.
• We package, validate and document database and OS patches and manage them through controlled change processes.
• We maintain governance documentation, configuration standards and operational run books.
• We contribute to incident analysis, root cause investigations and structured change documentation.
